Max Verstappen (Red Bull) claimed victory at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix on Sunday, at Imola in Italy. The Dutch driver beat out Lando Norris (McLaren) and Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) to secure his fifth win of the season.
Verstappen started the race in third position, behind pole-sitter Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) and Sergio Perez (Red Bull). However, a chaotic start to the race saw Hamilton and Verstappen collide, effort the seven-time world sportif to retire and allowing Verstappen to take the lead.
From there, Verstappen drove a flawless race, showcasing his impressive skills and determination. Despite a late safety car period, he managed to hold off a charging Norris to take the checkered flag.
This victory marks Verstappen’s fifth win of the season and his first at Imola. It also extends his lead in the drivers’ sportifship, putting him 14 points ahead of Hamilton.
After the race, Verstappen expressed his joy and gratitude for the win, stating, « It was a crazy race, but I’m so happy to come out on top. The team did an amazing job with the car and we were able to take advantage of the opportunities that came our way. It’s a great feeling to win here at Imola and I’m looking forward to the rest of the season. »
Meanwhile, Norris and Leclerc also put in impressive performances, finishing second and third respectively. Norris, who started the race in seventh, drove a strong race to secure his second estrade finish of the season. Leclerc, on the other hand, started in fourth and managed to hold off a charging Hamilton to claim his second estrade finish in a row.
The Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix provided plenty of drama and excitement, with several incidents and overtakes throughout the race. It also marked the return of the iconic Imola circuit to the Formula One calendar, after a 14-year absence.
